520 | |a QUALITY ASSURANCE OF TESTING METHODS AT CIMB-JP.Hill, M.FroningForschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, S, 52425 Jülich, GermanyIntroduction: The Competent Incorporation Measurement Body at Jülich (CIMB-J) is notified for in-vivo and in-vitro assessments of internal dose in the surveillance of occupational radiation workers. Activities within this testing field are accredited according to the German adaption of ISO/IEC 17025:2005. Details on CIMB-J itself is subject of another contribution to this conference. Here the quality assurance of testing methods at CIMB-J is described. Testing methods: Testing methods used to assess the incorporation of radionuclides include ICP-MS, Low-Level Beta counting, LSC, Alpha spectrometry and whole-body counting. A wide range of Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma- and other emitters is covered by these methods.Quality assurance: CIMB-J puts a lot of effort into assuring the quality of its testing results. High demands on the quality of test methods such as the accuracy and traceability of test results require a systematic quality assurance. As well as internal measures as external measures are applied.Traceability: An important element of QA is traceability of results. Special care must be taken in in-vitro monitoring where generally excreta samples are shipped by dispatch. The documentation includes (1) personal-, sample and monitoring data and coding of data, (2) characterization of excreta samples and (3) registration of essential analytical steps performed. In in-vivo monitoring documentation of personal and monitoring data is associated with the appearance in person of the proband at the laboratory and generally done in advance of the measurement.Internal laboratory measures: Routine operational tests of the measuring systems are an essential part of QA measures. These are periodic function checks, periodic verification of the measuring systems, regular examination of background measurements and energy calibrations as well as blank value controls of chemical substances used. They cover a broad range from temperature controls (easy to be done) over checking vacuum pumps up to periodic verification of background and detection efficencies. For the whole-body counter the results of daily measurements with a reference source are documented in a database. Such the long-term behavior of certain parameters, e.g. energy drifts, can be observed.External laboratory measures: External QA is performed by participation in laboratory intercomparisons on a national and international level for direct and indirect measurements. Depending on the test, the internal dose assessment is also included. These activities are organized and evaluate by external experts, e.g. the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection or the PROCORAD organization. Final remark: The measures for quality assurance involve substantial technical and organizational complexity. The high costs in terms of time and finances are justified by the resulting reliabilty of testing methods, by documented proof of expertise and by high customer satisfaction. | ||
