There has been an increased focus on understanding theenergetics of structures with unconventional ordering (forexample, correlated disorder that is heterogeneous acrossdifferent length scales 1 ). In particular, compounds with theisometric pyrochlore structure 2 , A 2 B 2 O 7 , can adopt a dis-ordered, isometric fluorite-type structure, (A,B) 4 O 7 , underextreme conditions 3–7 . Despite the importance of the dis-ordering process there exists only a limited understandingof the role of local ordering on the energy landscape. Wehave used neutron total scattering to show that disorderedfluorite (induced intrinsically by composition/stoichiometry orat far-from-equilibrium conditions produced by high-energyradiation) consists of a local orthorhombic structural unit thatis repeated by a pseudo-translational symmetry, such thatorthorhombic and isometric arrays coexist at different lengthscales. We also show that inversion in isometric spinel occursby a similar process. This insight provides a new basis forunderstanding order-to-disorder transformations importantfor applications such as plutonium immobilization 4 , fast ionconduction 8 , and thermal barrier coatings 9,10 . |
