The International Seminar on Radioactive Waste Products - Suitability for Final Disposal - was held in June 1985 at the Nuclear Research Center (KFA) in Jülich (FRG). It was organized by the Kernforschungsanlage Jülich in cooperation with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) Braunschweig. About 170 scientists from 17 countries participated in the fourday seminar, in which 48 invited papers were presented. [...] The vivid discussions after each oral presentation have not beenrecorded in order to facilitate an open-minded scientific andtechnical exchange of opinions and ideas based upon a purelypersonal judgement without liability to national institutions.One of the major problems arising from the use of nuclear poweris the disposal of radioactive wastes which must be segregatedfrom the biosphere for a rather long time period. The evaluationand development of options for the disposal of all kinds ofradioactive wastes are of national concern, because the outcomeof this work will likely be a major factor in determining thefuture role of nuclear energy in most of the western countries.Most countries shall base their disposal strategy upon thefavourable principle of separation, concentration andconfinement, applying a multibarrier concept.The seminar provided an excellent interdisciplinary forum fordiscussions on all aspects of waste conditioning procedures anddisposal techniques including waste acceptance criteria andquality control of waste packages. The extensive discussionsamong the participants lead to a better understanding oftechnical as weIl as safety requirements, thus promoting theacceptance of radioactive waste disposal by the public.Furthermore, the seminar provided an opportunity to identifyissues and options for further research. |
