For the system uranyl-ion / tri(n-octyl)phosphine oxide (TOPO)/ excess di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene the ratio U : TOPO of the complex formed has been investigated spectrophotometrically using the method of continuous variations. In solutions 0.1 M in D2EHPA and 10$^{-2} to 10^{-3}$ M in hexavalent uranium and TOPO a complex with the molar ratio U : TOPO = 1 :1 has been identified. The order of magnitude of the dissociation constant of this complex was found tobe 10$^{-4}$. The applicability of the method of continuous variations to the investigation of this system complicated by side reactions has been demonstrated theoretically. The calculations refer to the following types of reactions: AC$_{2} + n B = AC_{2}B_{n} and AC_{2} + n B = AC_{(2-n/2)}B_{n} + n/2 C$ considering the side reactions B + C = BC and B + 1/2 C = BC$_{1/2}$ |
