In order to permit investigation of the cause of differences in radiation sensitivity, a search was made within the genus Triticum aestivum L. for varieties that differ sharply in this respect. Air-dry seed of 45 German winter wheat cultivars was subjected to an irradiation test (dose 10 to 30 kr). Radiation sensitivity was measured by determining growth depression in the primary leaf, survival rate and alterations in leaf number in the individual plants. In this way very marked varietal differences in radiation sensitivity could be found in the collection tested, the most sensitive varieties having a survival rate of only 50 % after irradiation with 20 kr whereas the most resistant had 85 % of survivors even after irradiation with 30 kr. |
