All EU countries must consider how they will fulfil European targets for the expansion of low carbon energy – doing so is also consistent with securing a stronger economic future, through reinforcing sustainable economic growth. Promoting environmental entrepreneurship in the energy sector forms part of a strategy to achieve this and creating a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem (Cohen, 2006), consisting of different elements which stimulate and support the growth of innovative new ventures in the energy sector, helps to promote entrepreneurship. These elements can be to do with public venture capital, green clusters or incubators and public research support. Countries have different approaches in terms of how to design this sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem and this paper contrasts the systems of Britain, France and Germany to highlight common strengths and weaknesses to elicit learning opportunities. Given the importance of both sustainability and entrepreneurship to future economic development, comparing national approaches to industrial policy in the energy sector can make a worthwhile contribution to the international management research field. |
