lt is the aim of this report to review the state of the art of catalytic recombiners, which convert hydrogen in the presence of the oxygen exothermally into vapor, and to give an overview on research and development activities of this field as a base for own investigations. Recombiners play an important rote in nuclear reactor technology . In case of a severe accident in Pressurized and Boiling Water Reactors high amounts of hydrogen (up to about 20.000 m$_{N}^{3}$ might be generated and released into the containment. The mixture consisting of hydrogen and oxygen may Bither turbulently bum or detonate. In the rase of detonation the shock wave may endanger the cornponents of the plant or even endanger the plant itself. At present it is assumed to apply the recombiners also in combination with other measures, e. g. igniters (dual concept). Effective hydrogen recombining devices may also be used in other energy plants, in which the handling of hydrogen may be associated with risks. These are e. g. chemical plants for producing or converting hydrogen or future thermal or electric Power generating units, which are fed with hydrogen, e. g. burners or fuel cells. The aim of further research and development work is on one hand to improve the removal capacities of existing recombiners and on the other hand to cover a broad speetram of accident scenarios by means of innovative technical measures. |
