This chapter describes a new heterogeneous architecture created at the Juelich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), its motivation and the development path that led to its final realization. Because it covers a broader scope involving several hardware platforms, the chapter is structured in the following way: first an overview of the Juelich Supercomputing Centre is given, to explain its context and background. In section 2 a historical view of the architectures and main systems co-developed at JSC is given, which led to the actual Modular Supercomputing architecture. Section 3 describes the JSC application portfolio and how the newly developed architecture aims to match it. An overview of the systems built following the Modular Supercomputing approach is given in section 4, elaborating on their detailed hardware implementation in section 5. The software and programming environments implemented to support the new architecture are described in sections 6 and 7, respectively. Section 8 treats the cooling and facility infrastructures. Finally, section 9 concludes the chapter with a look into the future of the Modular Supercomputing architecture. |
