520 | |a The present work deals with the characterization of the pelitic layers from the stratotype-profile of the Silurian/Devonian-boundary (Klonk near Suchomasty/Czech Republic). The investigated material is derived from the research bare hole Klonk-1, which was brought down parallel to the stratotype-outcrop. The litho- and stratofacies record of this well is part of the present work and documented in sppendic I. All in all, 140 samples were taken and subsequently investigated petrographically (thin-sections, mineralogy) and geochemically (TOC, HI, C/S-ratio, Th/U-ratio). The pelitic layers are homogeneously and evenly laminated rocks with a grainsizedistribution in the range of a claystone and mudstone. Beside the siliciclastic components quartz and museovite/illite, carbonate (essentially calcite) makes up the third major component. The subordinate minerals ankerite, albite, chlorite, pyrite and dolomite contribute to the composition of the rocks. An essential feature of the sedimentation in the transition from the Silurian to the Devonian is a trend of increasing carbonate-content. This is clearly to be seen in thin-sections by bioclastic components, whose first appearance is just below the Silurian/Devonian-boundary, and which become more regular in the Devonian. Indications of bioturbation as well as benthic fauna were not established in the samples investigated. The fossiliferous content is limited to planktonic and nektonic genera, among which graptolites are by far the most common. The appearance of the bioclastic components coincides with the first hardshelled fragments (bivalves, tentaculites, crinoids etc.). The pelitic layers are characterized by a high content of organic carbon (mean 1,50 wt.-%). The maturity of the organic matter corresponds to a vitrinite-reflectance of about0.8 % R$_{r}$. The hydrogen-index (HI) is 156 mg HC/g rock an average. The investigation of the paleoredox-conditions shows a prevailing dysoxic to oxic site of deposition, with a transition from dysoxic to oxic across the Silurian/Devonian-boundary. A few determinations of an anoxic to suboxic paleo-environment are limited to the rather dysoxically developed Silurian strata. By means of the multiproxy-analysis cyclic patterns of transgressiv and regressiv trends could be determined. The succession starts with a regressiv development in the toplayers of the Kopanina-Formation. With the beginning of the Pozary-Formation a transgression is documented, which shortly becomes interrupted by a regressive trend in the middle pari of this formation. The following transgression crosses the Silurian/Devonian-boundary and turns into a regressive trend, wich is developed slightly above these boundary-beds. The rest of the Lochkovian seems to be rather regressive, but care must be taken due to effeets of weathering. | ||
