520 |a Over the last two decades there has been intense theoretical and experimental interestin the physics of low-dimensional electron systems which are predicted to exhibit uniqueelectronic and optical properties. The reduced phase space available for electronscattering in one-dimensional systems - so called quantum wires - is expected to leadto a greatly enhanced mobility. Furthermore Fermi liquid behavior is predicted to giveway to Luttinger liquid behavior due to strong electron correlation while electron-holeinteraction should manifest in Fermi edge singularities to be observed in photoluminescencespectra. This thesis reports the successful preparation of high quality quantumwires by epitaxially overgrowing non-planar substrates. After discussing the basicgrowth mechanisms an such special surfaces, bandstructure calculations are used tohelp understanding the quantization properties of the resulting complex structuresof interconnected there-, two- and one-dimensional areas. Cathodo- and photoluminescenceexperiments prove the formation of high-quality quantum wires with strongconfinement potential and large subband spacing. Even the existence of Fermi edgesingularities in modulation doped systems can be revealed. While magneto-transportdoes not show clear evidence of one-dimensional electron transport, special experimentsindicate a restriction of current to the quantum wire as long the Fermi edgestays undisturbed.
