| 520 | |a The scientific and technical cooperation between the Research Center of Juelich and the Nuclear Research Center of Yogyakarta emphasizing "Environmental Monitoring and Specimen Banking" is a continuation from a previous project on "Total Diet Survey in Goiter Endemic Areas in Indonesia" both being supported by the International Bureau of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany. The former Cooperation (see the report in "Scientific Series of the International Bureau, Volume 34, Forschungszentrum Juelich, 1995) turned out to be so fruitful that a long term project for the establishment of a pilot Specimen Bank in Indonesia was initiated. The extensive exchange of scientists between both institutions enhanced mutual understanding and helped to improve research activities on both sides. Apart from the stimulation in technical terms emerging from the project, personal ties developed into friendly relationship between the involved researchers. The official initiation of the follow up project on "Environmental Monitoring and Specimen Banking" (EMSB) was celebrated on the occasion of a bilateral meeting between BATAN and FZ-Juelich held in Yogyakarta on December 12 - 14, 1995. The great success of this meeting emerged not only from the active participation of a number of high rank officials from Ministries of Indonesia and a representative of the German Embassy (Dr. H. Keune) but also from the high standard of more than 15 orallectures and about the same number of poster presentations all dealing with the scientific progress in monitoring and banking of environmental sampies in Indonesia and Germany. By the end of this symposium aselected group of experts formulated a number of recommendations for the future development of this project which are attached at the end of this volume as the "Minutes of Meeting". Our sincere thanks are due to all the participants for fruitful contributions, vital discussion and the many questions and answers within the sessions and during the session breaks. The local organizers and their effort to provide a stimulating environment are gratefully acknowledged. Last not least the financial aid of the INT as it was given to support travel expenses for the participants from Germany and the technical aid within this project to support some upgrading of analytical capabilities of the Indonesian partner Institute is highly appreciated. We heartily wish that this demanding project - as it is described in several contributions in this volume - will be successful and help to better understanding of environmental developments and processes in a tropical country, Indonesia and in a Central-European country, Germany. | ||
