Other than search engines like Google or Bing BASE searches the deep web as well. The sources which are included are intellectually selected and reviewed. BASE is operated by Bielefeld University Library.

The NTIS Database produced by the National Technical Information Service, is the preeminent resource for accessing the latest U.S. government-sponsored research and worldwide scientific, technical, engineering, and business-related information. NTIS is the central source for the sale of unclassified and publicly available information from research reports, journal articles, data files, computer programs and audio visual products from Federal sources. Additionally, information is available from international government departments and other international organizations including those from Canada, Japan, the former Soviet Union, Western and Eastern European countries.

OSTI.GOV contains over 70 years of energy-related research results and citations collected by the OSTI (Office of Scientific and Technical Information, US Department of Energy). It includes journal articles/accepted manuscripts and related metadata, technical reports, scientific research datasets and collections, scientific software, patents, conference and workshop papers, books and theses, and multimedia funded by DOE through a grant, contract, cooperative agreement, or similar type of funding mechanism from the 1940s to today. With nearly 3 million citations, OSTI.GOV includes citations to 1.5 million journal articles, one million of which have digital object identifiers (DOIs) linking to full-text articles on publishers' websites. Additionally, OSTI.GOV holds over 445,000 full-text Department of Energy-funded reports.

SciELO Citation Index is created in partnership with SciELO, the Scientific Electronic Library Online, and consists of Open Access journal content from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal, and South Africa. It covers over 1,100 journals. Scopus is an abstract and citation database for research literature published since 1996, with discovery and analytics tools. The multidisciplinary content covers the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Biomedical Research as well as Arts and Humanities and the Social Sciences.
