Nature is up to the present the most important source for chiral non-racemic building blocks ($\textit{chiral pool}$ compounds). Chorismate and related functionalized cyclohexadienes are interesting starting materials for chemical syntheses due to their high degree of functionalization. Microbial access to the $\beta$-amino acid 2,3-$\textit{trans}$-CHA was established by homologous expression of anthranilate synthase (TrpE$^{H398M}$), which was created by site-directed mutagenesis, and PhzD, an enzyme of the phenazine biosynthesis. [figure] 2,3-$\textit{trans}$-CHA and other functionalized cyclohexadienes were isolated in gram scale and high purity by different methods. The potential of functionalized cyclohexadienes for organic synthesis was predominantly demonstrated in the case of 2,3-$\textit{trans}$-CHD by different reaction types as well as natural product syntheses.
