A polymeric foil with an anti-reflective texture was designed to improve the incoupling of light into a solar cell and to enhance light-trapping in the weak absorption regime within the solar absorber. The textured foil can be used on solar cells of different materials, e.g. Si, CdTe or Cu(In,Ga)Se2. We investigated the impact of the textured foil mounted on top of silicon thin-film solar cells. The foil reduces the total reflectance r to values as low as r ≈ 3 %. It ensures a better light-incoupling at the air-glass interface and re-directs the reflections from the internal interfaces back into the solar absorber. At longer wavelengths, the textured foil also enhances the light-trapping of weakly absorbed photons. For a planar microcrystalline solar cell the enhancement of light-trapping was determined from the reduced reflection in the long wavelength range to be up to 17 % and up to 12% was determined from the increase of the external quantum efficiency. For thin-film silicon tandem solar cells we demonstrate an increase of the short circuit current density by up to 0.95 mA/cm², and of the conversion efficiency by up to 0.74 % (absolute). |
