Multiregional Input-Output (MRIO) databases deliver a detailed picture of production, consumption and trade relationships within and between economies, which makes them useful tools for a vast range of applications in fields such as industrial ecology or regional planning. Obtaining a meaningful overall picture, however, is labour- and cost-intensive, since it requires collecting, cross-referencing and harmonising large amounts of misaligned partial information. Whereas several MRIO databases on the international level have been published in recent years, subnational databases exist only for few countries, due to the scarcity of regional data. The scope of the presentation is twofold: In the first part the construction of the German MRIO, which depicts the regional economies of Germany’s 16 federal states, is presented. Particular attention is paid to estimation of interregional trade flows based on freight transportation data. The second part presents first results of a prototype model to account for regional economic impacts and spatial spillover effects of the 2013 flooding disaster in southeastern Germany |
