To an ever greater extent science and research are being judged on their ability to incorporate their results into questions of international re1evance. This is particularly true of atrnospheric chemistry which is faced with the global consequences of anthropogenic emissions -and which sees its results channelled into far-reaching political decisions. In this, as in an scientific fields, a wide-ranging but equally closely-knit network of scientists is the way to guarantee the best possible approach to dealing with urgent questions. In order to foster and develop scientific cooperation it is essential to integrate young scientists into this network at an early stage. The Research Center in Jülich and the National Center for Atmopheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, have been working together intensively for a long time. By way of workshops entitled "Networks of Young Scientists in the Field of Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Change" they have successfully realized the idea of fostering contacts amongst the younger generation of academics. The participation of the greatest possible number of young scientists from Germany and the USA working on the topic of the first workshop, "Volatile Organic Compounds in the Troposphere", led to the establishment of a new "network" and extended the existing one. Apart from exchanging ideas on the subject, both in plenary sessions and small groups, it was possible to discuss the issues currently commanding the attention of the young participants, which they summarized as follows: "The greatest hurdles [the young scientists] face include a broad perception of their research fields, identifying the significant and relevant research questions, and developing the network of contacts needed to successfully investigate these questions [...]. The contacts [established] provide a linkage between names and faces which will be very helpful in continuing these relationships [...]" One of the tasks of the German-American Academic Council Foundation (GAAC) is to stimulate and support projects which promise to create lasting contacts between young academics in both countries. The first workshop run by the FZ Jülich and the NCAR has proved most convincingly how this task can be tackled. On behalf of the GAAC I should like to wish the organizors every success in continuing their work in future. |
