The automatic, quantitative image analysis is a well knwon procedure for the investigation of visually discriminable structural elements of samples with respect to specified parameters. In this report, the procedure is introduced as a method for determining porosity and density of pyrocarbon-coatings of nuclear fuel kernels. The first part describes the terms "porosity" and "density" and presents the different procedures to measure these parameters. In particular, the limitations of the definitions used so far are discussed. The second part presents the first comparative measurements of porosity and density, resp. , carried out with different methods. These measurements prove the quantitative image analysis to be suitable for determining (macro-) porosity of pyrocarbon and to give an additional information about density at least combined with another method for determination of density. Combined with the "sink float"-method, the quantitative image analysis can be used for the investigation of geometrical density of pyrocarbon. |
