According to current plans concerning the Gorleben repository, the cavities remaining after the emplacement of waste packages in vertical boreholes and drifts will be backfilled with crushed salt packing material. Amongst other aspects, crushed salt serves as a flame barrier preventing the propagation of any flame fronts arising in an explosive atmosphere. As part of the present studies, the quenching effect of loosely packed crushed salt is being examined in a hydrogen-air atmosphere. As a function of various parameters, the height of loosely packed crushed salt required to prevent flame propagation is being determined experimentally. |
