In this paper we discuss the translational and rotational vibrations of the molecules bound in a molecular crystal. The molecules are treated as rigid. The crystal eigenvibrations are plane waves partly translational ("phonons"), partly rotational in character ("torsons"). The harmonic force constants and their symmetry relations are formulated for the case that the atomic displacements are described in terms of molecular translations and rotations. A simple molecular chain model is used for illustration. |
